it's a pity and a sin,

SHE DOESN'T QUITE FIT IN

A little light reading

James had arrived at the palace some hours ago. He always had a room waiting from him there after his arrival. He was yet to meet with His Majesty on news of his latest trip and plans of where he was to sail next, so he decided to kill some time within the palace’s vast library.

James was not a man who enjoyed fiction, and he was thankful for the array of non-fiction books within. Many he had read on sailing, the sea, ships, the creatures of the deep, and he had found his hands running idly over familiar titles. He gave a huff and continued on, finally stumbling across a book of sea myths and legends. He pulled it out and turned it over in his hand, finally giving a defeated huff and going over to sit in the spacious armchair by the window.

He had been told of many of these myths, but reading them made him feel as if they were more truer than simply being told of them. The deadly Kraken of the sea, the seductive Sirens who coaxed brave sailors to their deaths, the ghost ship of Davy Jones… He found himself nose-deep in the book, unaware of anything around him.

Ever since she had been informed about the library, Belle had been dying to spend some time in it. Books had been a huge part of her childhood, especially after her mother passed away, but she had spent most of her time getting the lay of the land, so to speak, and familiarising herself with her duties now as a Lady in Waiting. In her spare time, she had been reading through the books she had brought from home, but she had already finished those and now, she needed something new. Something with a bit of adventure.

Pushing open the huge doors to the library, her mouth slowly opened as she took in the sheer size of the library, the shelves filled with thousands upon thousands of books, and excitement rose within her. Entering, and pushing the door closed behind her, she approchaed the shelves, running her fingers over the spines of the books there, utterly in love with them already. She didn’t recognize half the titles, and that excited her, and so she grabbed one at random off the shelves before turning, skirts swishing, to head over to the seating area.

With her head already buried in the book, she didn’t realize there was anyone else in the library until she almost sat on top of him, at which point she immediately stepped back, face turning a flaming red as she struggled not to drop her book, hand flying to her head so she could adjust her hood.

“I-I apologize my Lord, I was distracted, I didn’t see you,” she stammered, stepping even further back, trying to bring herself under some semblance of control. “I truly apologize, my Lord.”

“I did mention my name earlier… I’m Lord Stefan, the court… I can’t really explain it to you… you might want to ask my jerk older brother.” He glanced over at her, she would be popular to the men of the court, such a beauty.

Belle’s face turned a shade of rose as she realized that yes, he had mentioned his name. Wonderful. Not even an hour at Court and already, an idiot.

“My apologies, my Lord. I’m not usually this forgetful. I’ll be sure to ask him,” she promised as they walked. The court was huge, beautiful, and she was falling in love with every inch of it already - all she needed now was a map, and she’d be all set.

“What’s the King like?” She inquired, curious about the sovereign she’d never met.

“King Adam… well… He’s a generally a courteous man, but he’s got a bit of a temper… but it’s not his fault being first in line… he’s so young.”

Well. That sounded interesting, if a little alarming. So many times, she had read a book where a tempermental King had become a tyrant of a sort - but that was books, and even she knew that not all fiction could translate to reality. Perhaps he was just worried. He had just lost his father after all, and like Stefan said, he was young, and now had an entire kingdom thrust upon his shoulders. She’d wait until she saw the King in person before making a judgement.

“I see,” was all she said as they walked, still following Stefan and trying to remember all the turns they had taken so she wouldn’t get lost later. “Thank you for leading me, my Lord. You’re very kind,” she complimented him.

He stopped and turned. “I’m not kind, miss. I’m just showing you some pity before the sharks find out about you.” He leaned in lifting a small lock of her hair and smelling it. “They’ll devour you… really quick.”

Well - that was a great boost for her confidence. Belle flinched as Scar reached out to touch her hair, sniffing it; was that normal around here? Clearing her throat a little, she tilted her head up and took a step back, her jaw set and distaste in her eyes.

“I think you’ll find they’ll have a hard time making a meal out of me, my Lord,” she commented dryly. “I’m not a courtly maiden, and I won’t be devoured by anyone here, sir. If a shark finds me, they’ll find a fight. Are we almost at my chambers, my Lord?”

touch-every-star asked: I think I found a book of yours, Madame, it was left on the staircase by the library. "A Romantic History of the Italian Republic," I think is the title.

Oh! Thank you very much, my Lord - I’ve been wondering where I left this. Sorry if returning it was any trouble to you. May I ask your name, sir?

Forgive me, but maybe you should do something to make them fawn over you? I am Isabelle, by the way. Isabelle Merchant, though friends call me Belle. May I ask your name?

Ahaha, no. I am a lady. I should only need to continue being the perfect woman that I am, no extra work necessary.

Isabelle Merchant? I take it that you are new around here. My name is Georgette, Georgette Foxworth.

I am - Maurice Merchant is my father. And I’m also a lady, but I still work hard to improve myself. You should do it too, Georgette. Do you also serve the Dowager Queen? I haven’t seen you before.

dizzy-drizzy asked: Hmph! Kindness doesn't get you anywhere--just look at yourself! Anyway, I need to be off to tea now.

Just look at me? I’m in the same position as you, Drizella. Clearly, it’s gotten me somewhere, as I’ve come from country to Court. Where has your nastiness gotten you?

dizzy-drizzy asked: Maybe if you didn't spend so much time with your nose in those dusty shelves, you would know some people. I'm Drizella. Don't get in my way~! I'll be seeing you around.

Maybe if you put your head in some books, you’d learn a little bit of kindness, Drizella. I’ll try and stay out of it - I don’t think I’d want to be in it anyway. I feel sorry for the people who are.
